Jazmine, a three-year-old from Bismarck, has a smile that lights up a room. Her life so far has been filled with ups and downs, but her smile still finds its way to her face and warms the heart of anyone who sees it.
At the young age of three, Jazmine was diagnosed with optic glioma, a rare tumor that grows in the brain. When it was discovered that the optic glioma was affecting her eye function and vision, it was recommended that Jazmine begin a chemotherapy regimen for approximately 60 weeks! Through it all, this little girl has kept her amazing smile on her face and had an amazing smile and a love for life.
Each wish begins with a referral and Jazmine was referred to Make-A-Wish® by her mom, Melissa. Upon confirmation of eligibility, the wish granting process began. Wish granters met with Jazmine and her family to discover her one true wish. Jazmine wished to play in the sand and water in Hawaii.
Jazmine’s wish began on February 14, 2015. This date was special to her family because it marked the one year anniversary of her adoption. It was the perfect day to start her Make-A-Wish experience! Picked up by a limo and whisked away to the airport, the family said goodbye to the snow-covered ground and winter jackets. Their next stop would require swimsuits and sunscreen!
Upon arriving in Hawaii, the family was greeted with an “aloha” and each given a lei, a symbol of welcome and love in Hawaii. This warm welcome helped set the tone for their trip. Sun, sand, water and family time were on the itinerary this week.
While Jazmine had ample time to play in the beautiful Hawaiian sand and crystal blue water, the family also took surfing lessons, attended a luau where Jazmine was able to perfect her hula dancing skills, and got up close and personal with a dolphin.
Upon returning from their trip, Jazmine’s mom, Melissa said, “The whole trip was amazing and just as magical as we had hoped! It was just what we needed after an extremely hard year.”
This trip was a highpoint in the family’s life. Their experience was a week with no medical appointments, no pokes, no chemo and no schedule. Just sunshine, warmth, playing in the sand and water and being able to just relax as a family. Jazmine had so much fun and for her family, seeing her eyes light up and her incredible smile all week long was just beautiful and heart-warming. This is why wishes matter.
