Fargo, ND)- June 21, 2013 –For most kids a trip to the pool is a summertime treat, but for 12-year-old Lane Kulsrud, it’s also a way to fight the onset progression of PKAN. PKAN is a neurological disease, characterized by an excess build-up of iron in the brain. Lane and his two brothers, who are also diagnosed with PKAN, are the only registered cases in state of North Dakota. After spending countless hours in a therapy pool fighting to gain back muscle strength, Lane was eager to trade the familiar chlorine water for the salty waves of Hawaii.
Complete with leis and sunshine Lane’s wish began with a send-off party at the Fargo RedHawk’s game. When asked by Make-A-Wish® volunteers why he chose Hawaii, Lane perked right up to say the number one thing was to swim with dolphins. Which he did at the Hilton Waikoloa Village.
Lane’s wish fulfillment began on an already special day of the year, his birthday. Lane, his parents and his two brothers arrived to the airport in style, thanks to Fargo X-treme limousine. 3,798 miles and two stops later the Kulsrud clan was greeted at the Kona-Big Island of Hawaii.
While in Hawaii, Lane and his family attended the Legends of the Pacific Luau. The luau included authentic Polynesian dancing, music and an extensive tropical buffet; complete with a roasted kalua pig. And of course his wish would not be complete without the opportunity to hang out with dolphins.
From the very beginning of Lane’s wish journey he expressed his desire to swim with dolphins. Not his therapist, or his parents, but the playful and friendly dolphins. Face-to-face; Lane fed, touched, played, and of course swam with the marine mammals.
Lane’s wish was sponsored by Luis Garcia through the Adopt-A-Wish® program.
