Cassie and her family were guests at the Dickinson Noon Lions Benefit for Make-A-Wish North Dakota in March. During this event, Cassie played with other wish kids, spent time with her family, enjoyed dinner and browsed the auction and raffle items. Little did she know that later on in the evening she would be visited by her favorite ice queen and snowman with a very special announcement.
It was during the benefit that Cassie found out her wish to meet Mickey Mouse was coming true! In less than a month, Cassie and her family would leave behind the cold weather, appointments and stress of living with cancer and trade them in for sunshine, meeting Mickey Mouse, rides and warmer weather.
At the young age of 7, Cassie has been through more than she should. After a fall while playing with her brother, Cassie was sporting a bump on the head. Thinking it was nothing more, life went on. However, the bump didn’t go away and doctor after doctor dismissed it as a hematoma. Cassie’s mom, Jen, knew it was more than that and finally during a procedure to remove the hematoma it was diagnosed as acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
The family was sent to University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital to begin treatment. Here, Cassie spent almost two months. She was able to go home and continue her treatment at Bismarck Cancer Center. She continues to undergo treatment and will have her last treatment in April 2017.
Once she was referred to Make-A-Wish, volunteer wish granters Lindsay, Sarah and Kelly met Cassie and it was clear that she loved all things Disney, including her favorite character, Mickey Mouse. When thinking about who she would want to be, where she would want to go, what she would want to have, or who she would want to meet her answers almost all revolved around Disney!
Cassie decided that her one true wish would be to meet Mickey Mouse. Make-A-Wish North Dakota knew the best place to do that was Walt Disney World® Resort.
With her wish determined, staff and volunteers worked to make Cassie’s one true wish come true and the entire process magical. From the limo ride to the airport to meeting Mickey Mouse and everything - and everyone - in between made Cassie’s wish an amazing adventure for her and her family. Jen, Cassie’s mom, said “everyone really went above and beyond to make the trip special.”
Cassie and her family stayed at Give Kids The World® Village while in Orlando. During her wish she visited Magic Kingdom®, Universal Studios®, and SeaWorld®. She rode as many rides as she could and loved the fact that she had a special pass that allowed her to get right to the front of the lines! She got to meet all her favorite characters, princesses and did so much more. She loved everything! One of the highlights was being part of the conga line at Magic Kingdom with Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald Duck and her brother.
One of the things Cassie was looking forward to on her wish was spending time with her family and she was able to accomplish that and make memories that will last a lifetime.
The wish definitely left a lasting impact on Cassie and her family. Jen, says, “We’ll never forget everything that was done for us and everyone who was a part of the wish.”
